Successful startup at NorPaper Avot Vallée: “German press” improves paper quality
NorPaper Avot Vallée located in Blendecques is the largest French producer of white testliner made from 100% recycled paper. In order to improve paper quality – particularly in terms of surface properties and printability - NorPaper opted for the modification of PM 2’s dryer section.

To meet its customer’s objectives, Bellmer integrated a special “German press” in the dryer group. Unlike a regular press nip, this solution includes a cooled, rubber-lined press roll with separate steam pressure regulation presses against a reinforced drying cylinder. This set-up allows a special smoothing effect to be achieved. In order to realise optimum surface smoothness, the point of installation and the linear pressure of the German press are highly important. The decisive factor is the correct paper web humidity. Project engineering and management were both undertaken by Bellmer. The complete mounting process was performed without use of the hall crane, despite the fact that the heaviest component weighed not less than six tons!

Thanks to good planning, erection and start-up were performed according to schedule. Bendtsen values for surface smoothness and quality of printability were clearly improved right from the outset. The porosity values of the paper were also positively influenced.
