Production enhanced in Felixton 'Mondis best rebuild in South Africa
Mondi Packaging South Africa (MPSA) with its three mills in Springs, Piet Retief and Felixton, is part of the Mondi Group, which has operations worldwide.

At its Felixton operation, Mondi produces 110,000 tons/year of high quality fluting papers for use in corrugated packaging. The main market sectors for this product are agricultural and commercial packaging, which require high quality flexographic print and superior compression strength to ensure protection of goods in transit.

To provide an even better service to its customers and meet their needs even more precisely, Mondi - which is market leader in fluting papers - decided to upgrade its PM 3.

Since Mondi has had a very positive experience with its Bellmer EQUALReeler in the Springs mill, the management decided to undertake this challenging project with Bellmer at the Felixton mill, too. Bellmer was the general contractor and assumed responsibility for all components from the headbox to the pope reeler. The core part of the project was the rebuild of the press section with integration of a TwinningPress shoe press suitable for linear pressures up to 1,200 kN/m.
The scope of the project also included extensive improvements to the approach flow, plus wire and dryer sections. The scope of supply also included two Bellmer EQUALPulpersto improve stock pulping.

The rebuild of the paper machine was completed with the installation of an EQUALTransporter system, including a new EQUALUnwinder unwinding station for the existing slitter winder with automatic reel transport system from the Bellmer EQUALReeler up to the unwinding station.

The rebuild will result in an increase of production from 110,000 to 155,000 tons per year.
Full production capacity will be reached in 2009.

Start-up of the upgraded PM 3 was successfully performed in the 1st quarter of 2008.

Mill Manager Brian Smith reported the upgrade to be "the best rebuild Mondi Packaging did so far in South Africa." We feel proud to have worked on site with Mondis multi-national team, and to have been part of such as successful project.
